John T. Smallwood is a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completed additional studies at Samford University and earned his Juris Doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law in 1992.
J.T. was elected in the general election held in November, 2002. He has managed and consulted in numerous state and local campaigns.
He brings to the Tax Collector's Office an extensive background in law and business. He served as Law Firm Administrator and as a lecturer in Law and Ethics. Additionally, he brings a common sense approach to solving problems, which was honed while being a small business owner.
J.T. is involved in numerous charitable and civic activities.
Johnny L. Curry

Johnny L. Curry is a native of Bessemer, Alabama. He was born in the show of the Bessemer Courthouse at the old Bessemer General Hospital less than one-half block from where he now works.
Johnny was appointed Assistant Tax Collector by Governor Kay Ivey on Sept. 28, 2023 following the untimely passing of his predecessor. He began his work experience in 1976 at what was then South Central Bell Telephone Company in a variety of jobs ending in the Finance sector at the time of his retirement. That was followed by 14 years as a Special Projects Director at American Village in Montevallo which is dedicated to teaching about the founding of our great American Republic. This civic education institution was in part made possible by legislation he sponsored during his sixteen year tenure in the Alabama legislature.
Elected four times to represent the people of western Jefferson County, Johnny would serve eight years as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee where he helped develop both the Education and General Fund budgets of Alabama.
In addition, his other civic involvements include appointment by three successive Governors to Alabama as a Commissioner on the Alabama Historic ironworks Commission that oversees the operation of both Tannehill and Brierfield State parks. For many years he has been a President of the (private) Foundation Board of Alabama Public TV. He also served 10 years on the Board of Citizenship Trust.
Since 1986 he has been a member of the Alabama Republican Executive Committee where he serves as official "Party Historian".
Johnny is a lifetime resident of Jefferson County where he has lived in Hueytown for all but six years of his adult life. He has been married to his wife Mary Gugliotta Curry since 1978. The are the parents of one son, Jay.
